How long have you been working in Boston?
I have been living in Boston since the end of July, 2023, setting up the company and advancing everything needed for the store opening.
What does your company do?
FOOD & LIFE COMPANIES, Ltd. operates restaurant brands such as Sushiro and Sugidama and is aiming to realize the vision of “Discovering new tastiness, Sharing moments of joy” together with our "COMPANIES" - the various multinational brands in our group. As a Japanese food service leader, F&LC operates over 1,000 restaurants across Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Mainland China, and Indonesia. On April 25th, 2024, we grand-opened Sakabayashi Sushi Tavern, our only store in the United States, on Boylston Street in Boston.
What are the benefits and challenges of working in America?
Due to the significant cultural gap between America and Japan, as a Japanese, showing attention to detail and hospitality that are taken for granted in Japan can be an advantage in standing out in the American market. The challenge is the need to overcome conflicts that occasionally arise from cultural differences and language barriers in the store-opening projects and store operations.
What is your favorite thing about Boston?
I am very fond of the cityscape where historical buildings and modern structures coexist, as well as the beauty of Boston Common and the Charles River. Additionally, I am touched by the love that Bostonians have for their city and the welcoming mood they show for new neighbors like us.
Thank you, Mr. Tanaka, for a great interview.
