Miho Owens - Director & President - Information Development America

[Owens in Tokyo, Japan]

How long have you been working in Boston?

I relocated to Boston in 2006 and have been working at Information Development America since 2016. I travel between Japan and Boston approximately three times per year.

What does your company do?

Our parent company, ID Holdings, is an IT firm; Boston-based Information Development America primarily focuses on technology scouting and recruitment. Last year, Information Development America established a subsidiary to enter the food and beverage business. In this column, I would like to introduce Miraku Boston, the ramen restaurant that this new subsidiary is opening. Miraku's ramen features a broth made with Rishiri kombu, brought directly from Rishiri Island in northern Japan.

The original Miraku Ramen, well known for its long queues, uses abundant Rishiri kombu to create a ramen that is light, yet rich and flavorful. Due to the remoteness of Rishiri Island, Miraku's "Yaki Shoyu Ramen" is often described as the hardest-to-get ramen in Japan. Come and enjoy it at our new Coolidge Corner shop, opening in mid-September.

What are the benefits and challenges of working in America?

If I can list some benefits...

-Innovation and Technology: The USA is a hub for innovation and cutting-edge technology.

-Cultural Diversity: Working in America exposes individuals to a rich cultural tapestry, facilitating global perspectives and cross-cultural collaboration.

I have been volunteering as the administrative coordinator for Japan Festival Boston for over 10 years. This year's event in April marked its return after a five-year hiatus. New committee members and post-COVID procedural changes posed a challenge. Despite the hurdles, we were fortunate to have good weather and experienced record-breaking attendance: more than 100,000 weekend visitors. Japan Festival Boston 2024 was a tremendous success.

-Networking: The networking opportunities are extensive, with access to industry leaders, mentors, and professional communities. I work in an office located within CIC and enjoy daily interactions with a variety of people.

And challenges...

-Competitive Job Market: The job market can be highly competitive, requiring persistence and unique skills to stand out.

-Cost of Living: Certain regions in America have a high cost of living, impacting affordability and lifestyle choices.

-Healthcare and Benefits: Understanding and navigating healthcare systems and employee benefits can be complex and vary significantly.

What is your favorite thing about Boston?

My favorite thing about Boston has to be the perfect mix of history and fun. I love wandering around the old streets of Beacon Hill, visiting cafes to hang out and chat with friends. Boston's got a great vibe that keeps things interesting!
