Where were you in Japan as a JET and when?
I was in Kashiwazaki-shi, Niigata-ken (2003-2005).
What sparked your interest in applying for the JET program?
As someone who is half-Japanese, I have always felt a strong attachment to my Japanese heritage. I had only visited Japan a couple of times but loved everything about the people, the land and the culture. Being able to live in Japan and fully immerse myself had always been a dream and the JET program provided me with the perfect opportunity to connect with locals as well as other JETs looking to explore Japan.
What are some of the things your prefecture is known for? e.g. food, hotspots, etc.
Niigata is famously known for its rice and its snow. As someone who was born and raised in Canada, even I was surprised by the amount of snow! Thankfully this meant many weekend getaways to experience some incredible snowboarding conditions (and of course the essential post-snowboarding onsens!).

Did you pick up any of the regional dialects? What are some of your favorite words or phrases?
I can't say that I picked up any specific regional dialects but being on the JET program provided me with the opportunity to learn Japanese and communicate with friends and relatives in a way that I hadn't been able to before.
If you were to return to live in Japan, would you choose to live in that same prefecture? Although I loved my time in Niigata, I would likely live in a different prefecture so I could experience more of Japan's diverse culture.
How has your connection in relation to Japan changed since living in Japan?
Not only do I feel an even stronger connection to Japan and my heritage, but having picked up some of the language has allowed me to connect with my extended family in a way that I hadn't been able to before. I continue to be fascinated with the culture and visit Japan every chance I get. Japan will always be a part of me and will have a special place in my heart.
