About the event

JSB members are invited to join for a private viewing of tatami craftsmen at the Machiya House in the Boston Children's Museum.

The Boston Children’s Museum welcomes two tatami-shokunin artisans, Takayuki Umeda-san and Hiroyuki Tanaka-san, from Kyoto’s Motoyama Tatami Shop. Umeda-san is an expert of Kyoto tatami and has a shop in Kyoto’s Tanba region. His son is currently undertaking the apprenticeship at Motoyama Tatami Shop and learning to be a tatami shokunin like his father. Tanaka-san is a member of Motoyama Tatami Shop and one of the principal staff members at its Tokyo branch shop.

Umeda-san and Tanaka-san will be here to repair the tatami floor of Kyo-no-Machiya, the Japanese House exhibit at Boston Children’s Museum.

During the private viewing, JSB members will be able to view the craftsmen working, ask questions, and listen to the history of the Machiya house.
